Eurocentric Christian Values on Teen Pregnancy

2008.09.06

I have found that most of the commentary on the pregnancy of Bristol Palin, the 17 year old, unmarried daughter of Republican V.P. nominee Sarah Palin to be... well in a word... "despicable". Not only from their political opponents but also from their supporters. Using this issue to further political advantage, from both sides, shows that there are no boundaries sacred or respected in the quest of unbridled ambition... which is no surprise really. I give much props to Barack Obama and Joe Biden for quickly and clearly stating that as far as they are concerned, this issue is off-limits in their political campaign.

However in saying all this, the reactions on a cultural, religious and "racial" level, does reveal a certain dynamic which I do find enlightening... (but also not surprising). I want to share this excellent article from theROOT which I believe very succinctly lays out the issue from this perspective: "For the Bible Tells Me So..."

Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac to be Seized

2008.09.06

Apparently, it's official, or just about. The two big mortgage underwriters are about to be taken over by the government to avoid bankruptcy. For the average Joe it's a good thing. Another major failure, not to mention two, would send the markets further into chaos only meaning worse losses in investments in general, a higher cost of borrowing, and more job losses as things soured. But the flipside is, somewhere we will pay more in taxes to pay for the cost of this bailout.

4 Important Keys of Effective Communication

2008.09.06

There are four aspects of effective communication. Remember, not all communication is verbal. Actions, facial expressions, and posture all communicate a message. Some people unknowingly send the wrong message.

1. Discretion.

The dictionary defines discretion as being careful about what one says or does, or the ability to keep silent; regulated by one's own choice. Discretion is a choice. It is a quality that you develop and master, becoming more discrete as you practice. Keeping quiet is the best way to practice. Talking too much is very destructive. High achievers have learned to guard their conversation carefully, knowing when to speak and when not to speak, what to say and what not to say.

2. Active Listening.

It is nearly always more profitable to listen than it is to speak. A good listener may hear something that will add to his collection of knowledge. Be attentive to what others say. You practice active listening by mentally repeating what the other party says a moment after he says it. You will stay alert and grasp the details of the conversation. This takes practice, but soon it will become a part of your everyday conversation.

3. Clarity.

Be clear with your words. Whenever you attempt to present an idea or the progress of a project, prepare what you say. Be clear, concise, and candid in every conversation. Allow your boss's questions to carry on the conversation rather than your presentation.

4. Gain Understanding.

Don't leave the conversation until you understand what is expected of you. Don't feel unprofessional for asking your boss to explain what he wants from you. Write it down. This shows him that you are interested in doing what he says. Gaining a deeper and more clear understand will greatly enhance the final product.

Learning to communicate is crucial in the workplace environment. These are just four main aspects of effective communication. There are many more, but the point is to know with whom you are communicating. Everyone needs to be communicated with differently. Always ask yourself: How will they receive what I am trying to say? Step into their shoes, then make the decision to communicate or not.

Also, your body language consists of nearly 70% of all communication. How you posture greatly determines how yours words are received. This is a skill you must learn if you want to communicate effectively.

Take Action:

1. In what ways can you be more discrete?

2. How would you rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 as an effective listener? What can you do to improve your rating?

3. Always try to step into the shoes of those you are speaking with. Ask yourself, how will this effect them emotionally?

Bhutto widower elected Pakistani president

2008.09.06

By STEPHEN GRAHAM, Associated Press Writer

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - The widower of slain former leader Benazir Bhutto will succeed Pervez Musharraf as president of Pakistan after winning a landslide election victory Saturday.

Unofficial results announced after separate votes in the federal and provincial assemblies showed Asif Ali Zardari winning an overwhelming majority.

Pro-Zardari lawmakers, some in tears, shouted "Long live Bhutto!" as the figures came in. The couple's two jubilant but tearful daughters, one carrying a portrait of their late mother, smiled and hugged friends in the gallery of the National Assembly.

But Saturday also brought a brutal reminder of the threats to the nuclear-armed nation's stability, when a suicide car bomber killed at least 17 people and wounded 80 near the northwestern city of Peshawar.

The blast destroyed a police checkpoint, collapsed several shops nearby and left a three-foot crater in the road. Civilians dug frantically with their hands in hopes of finding survivors.

Already head of the main ruling party, Zardari becomes one of the most powerful civilian leaders in Pakistan's turbulent 61-year history. Last month, he marshaled a coalition that forced longtime U.S. ally Musharraf to quit as head of state.

Zardari, a novice leader untested on the international stage and stained by past corruption allegations, takes over at a critical time for the volatile, nuclear-armed Muslim nation of more than 160 million.

Pakistan's economy is crumbling, and Saturday's attack was the latest in a string of suicide bombings usually claimed by Islamic militants who have steadily gained strength since Pakistan joined the U.S. war on terrorism in 2001.

Washington is pressing Pakistan hard to eradicate Taliban and al-Qaida havens near its border with Afghanistan. An American-led ground attack said to have killed at least 15 in Pakistani territory Wednesday sparked outrage and embarrassed Zardari's party.

Rob McInturff, a State Department spokesman, extended congratulations to Zardari.

"Our position has been and has long been that we support the democratic process in Pakistan and we hope the government will focus on the challenges facing the country and the needs of its people," McInturff said.

Government ministers hailed Zardari's expected victory as a triumph for democracy nine years after Musharraf seized power in a military coup.

Musharraf, a former general, stepped down from the army last year, but only after imposing a state of emergency to fend off legal challenges to winning another term, this time as a civilian head of state.

Zardari says he will give some of the powers accumulated by Musharraf back to Parliament, but has not made clear how far he will go, sustaining concern that one strongman is replacing another.

Interior Ministry chief Rehman Malik said Saturday's bombing was an attempt to upset the progress of a country riven by ethnic and sectarian divides toward a more stable democratic federation.

If a reported Taliban claim of responsibility proves correct, "They'll have to pay for it," he said.

Like his late wife, Zardari is generally considered a pro-West liberal, and he is not expected to change Pakistan's commitment as an ally in the U.S. war on terrorism despite the recent raid and suspected U.S. missile strikes along the border.

Zardari and senior party officials have matched Musharraf's tough line against terrorism, insisting the battle against militants is Pakistan's own war. But a key test will be how much clout Zardari wields over Pakistan's powerful military, which has failed to halt the Taliban's rise in the nation's northwest despite stop-start battles.

The president has the power to dissolve Parliament and appoint army chiefs, and chairs the joint civilian-military committee that controls Pakistan's nuclear weapons.

A horse-loving aristocrat who has spent about 11 years in prison on corruption allegations that never resulted in a conviction, Zardari has surprised many with his ability to concentrate power since his wife was killed in a December gun-and-bomb attack and he inherited her party's leadership.

After ex-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's party switched to the opposition last month, Zardari quickly won support from smaller parties, suggesting he could give the country some stability as it faces economic challenges that include soaring inflation, power shortages and widening trade and budget deficits.

Saturday's voting bore that out.

A tally by The Associated Press of the results showed Zardari with 488 of the 685 votes, based on a formula that gave each of the four provincial assemblies equal representation and left most of the say with federal lawmakers.

Saeed-uz-Zaman Siddiqui, a former judge nominated by Sharif's party, was second with 153. Mushahid Hussain, a senator from the pro-Musharraf party routed in February parliamentary elections, was last with 44.

The Election Commission was expected to certify the results later Saturday so Zardari can be sworn in Sunday.

Information Minister Sherry Rehman called it a historic day with a tidal wave of support for both democracy and the People's Party.

"We have seen the legacy of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto come alive once again in the voice of the people through the four provinces, the Senate and the National Assembly of Pakistan," Rehman said. "The candle of democracy lit by her with her martyrdom is still kindling."

Zardari, the son of a landowning businessman and tribal chief from the southern province of Sindh, wed Bhutto in an arranged marriage in 1987. Many Pakistanis call him "Mr. 10 Percent," a reference to accusations he pocketed commissions on government contracts during her two terms as prime minister.

After Bhutto was killed, Zardari returned to Pakistan from exile, seized the reins of her party and led it to victory in the February elections.

Zardari's party and that of Sharif — historical rivals — formed a coalition which quickly crumbled once they forced out Musharraf with the threat of impeachment.

Sharif has pledged to be constructive in opposition, but continues to call for the reinstatement of Supreme Court judges purged by Musharraf.

Three of the judges were sworn back into the court Friday, but Zardari has blocked the return of ousted Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry, who had questioned a corruption amnesty granted by Musharraf that quashed long-standing cases against Zardari.

In Público

A historic moment for India as NSG gives it the nod

2008.09.06

In a historic moment that ended more than three decades of nuclear isolation for India, the 45-nation
Nuclear Suppliers Group Saturday rewrote their guidelines to resume global nuclear trade with New Delhi.
The NSG's decision to grant India a clean waiver from its existing rules, which forbid nuclear trade with a country which has not
signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), came Saturday afternoon after three days of intense diplomacy by the US
and India in the nuclear cartel that controls the global flow of nuclear fuel and technologies.
The nuclear deal is now headed for the US Congress, which meets September 8 to discuss an approval for the 123 India-US
bilateral agreement which will bring the landmark nuclear deal to its closure over three years after it was first conceptualised.
The two countries are expected to formally sign the bilateral pact, likely when Manmohan Singh goes to Washington towards
the end of September, that will restore nuclear trade with the US after a gap of 34 years.
Economic sanctions were imposed by the US and the rest of the world when India first conducted its nuclear test in 1974.
The NSG's waiver also frees India to sign bilateral civil nuclear cooperation agreements with France and Russia, leading
advocates of the nuclear deal, who also used their clout to win over sceptics in the nuclear cartel.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is set to sign bilateral civil nuclear cooperation with France when he goes to Paris for bilateral
talks Sep 30 after attending the India-EU summit in the coastal resort town of Marseilles.
The bilateral civil nuclear cooperation agreement with Russia, which was finalized last year and iniatialled early this year, will
be signed when Russian President Dmitry Medvedev comes to New Delhi in November this year.
The NSG had extended their two-day meeting in Vienna Friday by another day after marathon negotiations that went well past
midnight failed to bring sceptics around to back the nuclear deal.
Some sceptics in the nuclear club like Austria, Ireland and New Zealand, known for their hardline non-proliferation stance,
resisted till the last minute appeals by the US to accommodate India inside the global non-proliferation tent.
Austria and New Zealand, which were also supported by Norway, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Switzerland, had insisted
that provisions be included in the draft on the proposed waiver that will allow NSG to terminate nuclear business with India if it
conducted another test.
India's External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee's statement Thursday re-affirming New Delhi's commitment to a 'voluntary
moratorium' on future testing boosted India's case in the NSG and was praised as 'very significant' by NSG.
'This is a very significant statement which was discussed by members of the NSG and praised and welcomed by those in
attendance,' US Assistant Secretary for Arms Control and International Security Affairs John Rood told reporters at the end of
the of Friday's morning session of the NSG.
He added: 'On the basis of this a positive momentum has been generated in the discussion and as I said before we remain
committed to achieving the objective and remain optimistic that we can achieve that.'
'We remain committed to a voluntary, unilateral moratorium on nuclear testing. We do not subscribe to any arms race, including
a nuclear arms race,' Mukherjee said in his statement issued in New Delhi before the NSG met for the second day in Vienna.
The minister's statement and the existing guideline in the NSG that provides for termination of commerce with a country that
violates the rules and conducts a test were highlighted during Friday's discussions among the members to convince the
sceptics who are opposed to a 'clean waiver' for India.
However, in the end the US' arguments about the merits of accommodating India, the world's most populous democracy and a
rising economy, in the global non-proliferation order prevailed. Washington also managed to convince sceptics about India's
impeccable record in non-proliferation and how making an exception for India will be a net gain for the global non-proliferation regime.
